End of Sentinel 9.1

And thus ends the first non-Interlude chapter without Taylor in it. (Although Director Piggot may have been alluding to her at one point.)

We finally got to know Weld, which was fun! I had been looking forward to that, and what I found did not disappoint – he’s a very nice guy, with refreshing optimism, even if he did make a pretty big faux pas in not reading the room or researching the people he was replacing. I hope we get to see more of his experience as the new leader of the Brockton Bay Wards.

And it’s entirely possible that this Arc will stick to that topic. Nothing against her, but I’m okay with taking a break from Taylor for a while to follow a different POV.

Taylor may have been the primary POV character for eight Arcs, but it’s become increasingly clear that it’s hard to call her a main character, especially over the course of these last two Arcs. This story, so far, doesn’t have a main character. It’s a story not about a character, but about society at large, which we’ve so far happened to be seeing through the eyes of one Taylor “Skitter” Hebert.

(Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely do want to see what she’s up to later.)

So, next chapter… we might be going back to Taylor and presumably seeing the things I predicted for this chapter (whether her plan involves the Undersiders, what her plan actually is), or we might be sticking with Weld to see how he tries to rectify this awkwardness he’s created.

Or, hell, what if this Arc involves checking in on multiple groups of Sentinels, one per chapter? That’d be a neat gimmick, though I think I’d prefer sticking with Weld.

Either way, see you next time!

Sentinel 9.1

Howdy! Who’s ready to dive into Arc 9 with me? Well, if you aren’t, you’d better tune out now, because I’m going in!

I haven’t turned the page, so I don’t know what this Arc is called yet… let’s have a look, shall we?

Sentinel?

Does that have anything to do with bugs? I mean, I know what a sentinel is, I think – a sort of protective warrior or guard, right? – but I don’t think I’ve ever heard it in the context of insects.

Wait, is there a species called sentinel crab, or am I making that up? We did learn back in 3.1 that Taylor’s power also covers crabs (and we were recently reminded of that fact), so I guess it’s possible that the Arc titles might relate to those too. In which case the Arc itself might to some extent have to do with crabs, literally or metaphorically (though the protective warrior thing is more likely the main reason for the title).

Let’s do a little lookup.

Sounds like I wasn’t off the mark on the main meaning of the word. And sentinel crabs do exist. Good.

So, what does this mean for this Arc? Well, I think Taylor (or someone else?) will take on the role of a guardian of the city, or something like that. That does sound a lot like the heroes’ job, but maybe she’s going to be more of a neutral party, protecting the city from both villains and heroes? Also, Taylor’s ability to control crabs will possibly get involved somehow.

As for this chapter, I guess we’ll finally find out whether the Undersiders are going to be part of Taylor’s plan or not (coddamn cliffhanger… :p), not to mention what the plan actually is. Hopefully.

So, without further ado, let’s jump in and see how wrong I am this time! 😀

Arc Thoughts: Extermination

Hoo boy, what an Arc.

Where I felt that Arc 7 lacked a true climax, Arc 8 feels like a climax as a whole. This genuinely feels like a point where you could believably say “End of Part 1”.

Pretty much everything was really well written. Yes, that includes 8.3 – a chapter that was so thoroughly hopeless that I started talking about potentially quitting down the line if that became the norm. Now, looking back, I see reason to the hopelessness: They were legitimately fighting a hopeless battle, so Wildbow started establishing that feeling from the beginning. Is it not good writing to be able to put the reader into a state of mind that matches the situation like that?

Similarly, Wildbow pulled off one of the most effective false deaths I’ve ever seen in a work of fiction. I think the key was that Interlude 8a was written like a real death chapter, an effective one at that, to the extent that even though we didn’t see the “body”, I was far more sold on her death than Taylor was once we actually had the armbands reporting her name. (Incidentally, the armbands getting DDoSed was a fantastic way to preserve the ambiguity.) Taylor’s uncertainty also helped to make it not feel like a cop-out when Tattletale turned out to be alive.

Honestly, I should probably have known Taylor was right. She tends to be. 😛

And then there’s Armmaster’s shenanigans. Pride goeth before the fall, and Armmaster fell hard. Featuring a fantastic parlor scene run beautifully by Tattletale.

The Arc title

Usually these are too obtuse for me to figure out without help (”Shell” being a notable exception), but I think this time it’s pretty obvious. Lots of people just got exterminated by the Daleks Leviathan. What more is there to say?

I guess there could still be more layers to it, like to Leviathan, but I don’t have a nanotech Halberd.

Prediction review

Alright, so we’ve got two sets of predictions to go through here.

Let’s start with the predictions from the previous Arc Thoughts post:

The obvious one: Much of the city’s honorable cape population will band together to take down the Endbringer.

Check.

There will probably be a lot of death and destruction before they succeed, possibly including already named characters.

Check as fuck.

In particular, I’m a bit worried for Danny’s safety – Wildbow could get a lot of angst mileage from killing him off right now.

This one’s still up in the air. That fact leads me to believe he’s alright, besides the psychological results of still not having seen Taylor two weeks after a fucking Endbringer attack.

On a brighter note, I think the experience will cause Taylor to ultimately change her mind about leaving the Undersiders. We’ll also likely find out what the Undersiders ultimately decide to do regarding Coil’s offer and their existing arrangement. I’m no longer certain what they’ll decide, though I’m slightly leaning towards them accepting the offer.

That damn cliffhanger!

So yeah! Just bring it, Endbringer… wait, bad wor–

Oh, he brought it, alright.

And now for the closing post of 8.1. You may remember this as the time I bummed myself out by trying to speculate on who would die. Let’s see how wrong I was, shall we?

Armsmaster, for one, has a huge death flag. As far as Brockton Bay is concerned, he’s practically retiring in dishonor anyway, most likely exiting the story for good (except maybe a very occasional guest appearance). As such, there’s no reason for him to not end up dying in this battle, possibly heroically to make up for his dishonor.

Ahahaha! This must’ve been rich to read, knowing what was ahead.

I mean he’s still most likely exiting the story, but he’s retiring in far more dishonor, and probably a one-way elevator.

There’s also a risk of something similar with Aegis.

I can’t believe I predicted Aegis’ death. I think I must’ve forgotten about his power for a second back when I was writing this, because I was certainly surprised when he died.

Taylor, obviously, needs to survive if she’s going to keep being the POV character and narrator,

Which apparently wasn’t the plan!

but I’m not sure I’d assume the same plot armor for all of the Undersiders. One in four is a scary ratio when we’ve got exactly four of the main protagonists here.

Oh yeah, that’s another reason why I was so sold on Tattle’s death. And then after 8.7 brought her back, all of a sudden there was Brutus and Judas on the monument in 8.8, bringing us back up to 2/8 Undersiders… dammit.

(Not gonna lie, though, I’d much rather lose Brutus and Judas than Tattletale.)

Anyway, I think if anyone’s going to die among them, Brian is particularly vulnerable, being someone Taylor has built up a strong emotional attachment to (that attachment having been ripped to pieces in the last Arc only makes it worse). Alec is unlikely because he needs more fleshing out. Lisa has some of the same issue as Alec, though not as intensely – we know her a bit better, but I still feel like there’s a lot more to know about Lisa before she gets killed off.

I was wrong about Brian, though I suppose 8.8 helps to confirm that last point about Lisa.

As for the rest, Sundancer is at some risk, though I think Wildbow might want to delve more into the issues in the Travelers at a later date, and Sundancer seems to be his main conduit for doing so.

I really thought she was about to die at one point, but she just went “down” instead.

I’m also thinking at least one of the big shots might go down, to show even more how powerful Leviathan is. Legend and Alexandria are at a fair bit of risk due to their idolization by Taylor, though their status as Triumvirate members ought to protect them somewhat.

One of the asks did mention that Alexandria almost died, though like pretty much every other death here, that was more a quirk of RNG than anything else.

Maybe Myrddin or Chevalier will go down instead – as team leaders, they’re still fairly big shots, just not that big shots.

Nope.

On the other end of the scale, there’s likely cannon fodder such as a whole bunch of thus far unnamed Wards and Protectorate members, Parian, Bambina… Laserdream and/or Shielder might go down too so we’ve got some from New Wave…

Well, one of those, and his dad, I got right, as well as the at the time unnamed cannon fodder.

Basically, lots of people are gonna die and this is getting morbid. I’m beginning to understand Lisa’s reaction in Agitation 3.6.

I had no idea.

Predictions for Arc 9

Arc 9 is largely a mystery for now, due to the cliffhanger in 8.8, but it’ll presumably deal with Taylor setting the first parts of her plan into motion. If Taylor decided to involve the Undersiders in it, we’ll also be dealing with her trying to regain their trust.

There’s also a chance we’ll learn more about Noelle’s situation towards the end of the Arc, given the tendency of Interludes to cover content relevant to the Arcs on both sides.

There’s not much more I can say. Extermination was a good’un. See you soon for the next one!

End of Interlude 8b

That was an interluding Interest… wait…

I guess Wildbow felt like Coil’s power needed some demonstration. “Show, don’t tell,” they say, and now he’s shown after the telling that happened last chapter. On top of that, we got a bit of a look into Coil’s daily life, which was neat.

And then there’s the situation with Noelle. It’s unclear exactly what it is, both to the readers and to Coil, but whatever it is, it’s almost certainly not good, especially if Leviathan was able to sense it. Hopefully we’ll get more information from Tattletale later on, though it’s not guaranteed that she’ll actually be available to help out, depending on what Taylor’s plan is.

And… that’s it, then! Stay tuned for Arc Thoughts: Extermination!

Interlude 8… again

Howdy! Interlude 8, déjà vu edition, here I come.

So, who are we following today? I kind of expressed some of my thoughts on that just a couple hours ago in this ask response, but I guess I should reiterate:

I feel like we might be checking up on one of the hero teams. Maybe we’ll look from the POV of Legend for the Protectorate, Weld for the Wards (or, damn, what if we get Sophia), or one of the surviving New Wave members? Hell, maybe it’s time to learn about the Guild, even.

It’s also possible that we’re getting another Undersider Interlude, to see how one of the others is taking Taylor’s treachery, but I kind of doubt we’d get one this soon after Tattletale’s, and it has been two weeks. It’d be one thing to do that immediately after the reveal, but it seems a bit late now.

I’m gonna stop here, since I have a nasty habit of guessing pretty much everyone we know when it comes to Interlude POV characters. Let’s just jump in and find out!

End of Extermination 8.8

Where is Taylor going now?

This was a nice chapter. We got a glimpse into what the past two weeks have been like for Taylor, we finally learned how exactly Coil’s power works (and it’s really interesting), a lot of cool and new context was added to the first Lung battle and Taylor becoming an Undersider, and Taylor made an important decision and then quite rudely didn’t tell us whether the Undersiders were to be involved yet.

I am very intrigued right now, to see how Taylor decides to go about changing things. How she’ll go about making the world a bit better while not falling into the pitfalls of all the other people we’ve seen who were allegedly trying to make things better.

Next chapter… I don’t know. I don’t even know if it’s a regular chapter 8.9 or Interlude 9 (yes it still bugs me that Wildbow seems to be breaking from the “Arc N -> Interlude N” format) or even chapter 9.1 (which would set that right again). Let’s take a look at the link.

Interlude… 8… what.

Oh my cod now I have to call the one with Tattletale “Interlude 8 (Bonus)” or “the Tattletale Interlude” to separate it from this one? And what do I do with my tags?!

…I’ll have to tag that bridge when I get to it, I guess. At least it seems we’re setting the numbering back to the old pattern. Hopefully Wildbow figures out how he wants to number the bonus Interludes soon. 😛

So, uh, see you in Interlude 8.2, I guess!

Exterwination 8.8

HelloooooooooooOOOOOooooOOOooOOooooOo

It’s tiwe to liveblog some wore Morw!

Last tiwe mas awazing. Me learned that Tattletale is alive and Arwwaster mas even wore of a dick than me thought, as revealed by Tattletale mhile she mas being fucking amesowe.

And then shit ment south for Taylor as Arwwaster, in a last ditch effort to discredit Taylor, revealed to the Undersiders, everyone present and the viemers of Trickster’s video/streaw the true nature of Taylor’s first fem meeks as an Undersider.

Nom she’s leaving the hospital, mith nomhere to go. This chapter… pretty wuch anthyding could hadplen, but I’w thinking we might go looking for Danny and/or his house.

So mithout further ado or any sort of explanation for mhy I’w smapping Ms and Ws, let’s juwp into it!

End of Extermination 8.7

Hooooo boy. That was one hell of a ride.

Time for bullet points, I think.

  • Tattletale’s back, bitchesss! I was completely wrong before – it didn’t feel like a cop-out at all. Possibly because I was too busy being really relieved at the non-death of my favorite character and amazed at her brilliance in the rest of the chapter to care… But honestly, if anything, this might just make her “death” even better in retrospect. It’s difficult to make the audience believe that a major protagonist like this is dead, and Wildbow pulled it off so well that he got me, a usually relatively optimistic person, to be far more pessimistic about her chances of returning than Taylor. This in turn allowed me to empathize more with Taylor’s worry over her friend. Fantastic writing.
  • Her brilliance was already mentioned, but it deserves a point of its own. After turning up alive, Tattle proceeded to dominate the situation beautifully, and I loved it.
  • The mysterious conversation was, as I predicted, meant to be about Taylor possibly joining the Wards on a probation like Sophia, but it turned out so much more interesting thanks to Taylor discovering Sophia’s identity, not to mention Tattletale’s intervention. I know this is the third bullet point mentioning Tattletale’s brilliance in this chapter, but can you really blame me?
  • Armmaster… what the hell, man. Well, say hi to Bakuda and/or Lung from me if one of them’s still alive.
  • And then there’s the final development. The cat’s out of the bag and the mouse is running away. What do you do now, Taylor?

I suppose that last thing is what we’ll have to begin dealing with next time. It might be time to look for Danny, and/or check whether his house is still intact, too.

So yeah, I love this chapter. See you next time! 😀

Extermination 8.7

I’m Batman.

And, uh, I’m Krixwell. Howdy, everyone! I’m Batman. …yes. Hi to you too.

So, it seems we have a special guest for today’s liveblog. Surprise! …yeah, I’m pretty surprised myself. I’m Batman. Yes, Batman, we know. I’m Batman. *sigh* Anyway, I guess Batman will join me as I read I’m Madison. YES, WE KN– wait, what did you say? I’m Batman.

*ahem*

Anyway, last time was a multifaceted safari ride even though Taylor was stuck to a bed most of the chapter. I’m Batman. *glares* By the end, Taylor was up and running, attempting to escape Legend, Armmaster and Miss Militia’s mysterious talk, but she happened to run into a particular booth and learned a secret that shook her to her core – namely that I’m Batman. NO! Will you stop interrupting me, please? That Shadow Stalker was none other than Batman. Okay that’s it. Leave! Now! I’m Batman? Yes, yes you are, and I want you out, you’re ruining this intro! I’m Batman… I don’t care right now. Please, just… leave? Wait, where’d he go, he was right there a second ago.

Oh well, at least he’s not here anymore. As I was saying, Shadow Stalker turned out to be none other than Sophia Hess. The border between Taylor’s civilian life and her cape life keeps crumbling and that was one heck of a blow. In this chapter, Taylor is going to have to start processing this discovery, but she’ll probably be interrupted by PRT officers finding her in there. After that, I think this chapter will also give us the talk between the Protectorate higher-ups and Taylor.

Without further ado, I’m Batman. Waahh!! OH COME HERE YOU FU

End of Extermination 8.6

That’s right, we can go back to regular “End”s now. At least unless it turns out Leviathan isn’t as chased off as it seems.

So, that was an interesting chapter. Between Taylor talking to the nurse-in-training, getting healed and antagonized by Panacea (♠), learning that some of the Protectorate higher-ups want to talk to her and some unknown others, performing a daring escape and discovering that Shadow Stalker is Sophia Hess, there was plenty of action here for a chapter that mostly had the protagonist lying in a hospital bed. I quite enjoyed it.

That one of her tormentors is also a cape is a pretty big realization for Taylor. It marks the collapse of another guard post on the border between her civilian life and her cape life. One of the most important guard posts, in fact.

Also, this recontextualizes a few past events. At the mall, who stepped in-between Taylor and Emma? Sophia. And who is obsessed with being a rival to Grue, but romantically jealous over Brian? Sophia. (That last thing is almost approaching Miraculous levels of dramatic irony.)

So, next chapter, Taylor will have to deal with this discovery, which seems to have shook her so much that it’s only a matter of time before the people looking for her find her. As such, I suspect we might learn what Legend & co. have to say to Taylor as well.

See you then!
