She left the question unfinished, and the fragment of it on its own was a hard thing to hear.

Carol stared as Amy shuffled forward.  The cuffs weren’t necessary, really.  A formality.  Amy wasn’t about to run.

Are you…?

Sorry?

“It’s your last chance,” Dragon prodded.

“…going to go and say goodbye?”

Carol nodded.  She pushed the door open and stepped into the parking lot.

Amy turned to face her as she approached.

For a long minute, neither of them spoke.

I don’t think the pain is over yet, guys.

“Prisoner 612, please board for transport to the Baumann Parahuman Containment Center,” the announcement came from within the truck.

Yep. There she goes.

Fuck.

He’s supposed to be getting better, more disciplined.  Had she made the wrong call?  If Bryce was getting training with guns and knives, and still failing to shape up, this thing with him being recruited by Tattletale could be disastrous in the long run.

Hm. Perhaps.

It’s not like I didn’t spend some time right before this call talking about how Lisa is more likely to manipulate someone into villainy than Taylor, while largely forgetting about Bryce.

She waited a minute, then called the same number.

“Yes?”  Again, Jaw’s deep voice.

Hi. The little douche hung up on her.

“He hung up on me.  I wanted to ask you how he was doing.”

“The boy is learning.”

Yeah, but learning what? Clearly not decency.

“I’d rather he wasn’t learning how to use weapons.  If he’s getting in a situation where he needs to fight, you guys aren’t keeping your end of the deal.”

I mean, would you rather he get killed if he ends up in such a situation by accident?

“That would be Pritt.  He thinks she’s attractive, and listens to her best, so Minor has her accompany him much of the time.  She is a former child soldier, she would have thought self-defense was a good way to regain confidence after the boy lost his fingers.”

…sure, that does make a bit of sense. Just… make sure the confidence extends to other things, and he doesn’t rely on having weapons.

She could imagine Jaw saying that with Bryce overhearing, her brother getting simultaneously annoyed and embarrassed.  She liked it.

End of Buzz 7.11

So. Rachel came around, but the Undersiders as a whole are finding more and more reasons to be reserved about joining or even continuing to work for Coil. It’s safe to say his attempt at showing them how much they can rely on him backfired, and instead just managed to show them – or at least Taylor and Tattle – one of his darker sides.

Now the Undersiders have a major decision ahead of them, and since it turns out this isn’t the last chapter of Buzz, I think that will be the main topic of Buzz 7.12. Right now it could go either way, really – it depends on whether they want the things Coil promised badly enough to be willing to help a man who’d kidnap a 12-year-old and feed her drugs so she’d cooperate take over the city.

Yeeah, I think Taylor at least isn’t particularly thrilled about that idea.

I guess we’ll just have to see what happens next time. See ya then!

Fun fact: I’ve repeatedly run into trouble with the word “supernatural” on this blog. Because superhumans are known as parahumans in Worm, it strikes me as appropriate to change “supernatural” into “paranatural” when referring to parahuman powers. But I can’t do that, because the webcomic Paranatural exists and causes the word to be associated with ghosts and spectrals instead.

Paranatural is good, by the way – you should go read it if you haven’t. Although it’s rather different from Worm in tone, so I get it if it’s not everyone here’s cup of tea.
