Bitch glanced at Bastard.  He was growling, barely audible, low and steady, and his hackles were raised.  Were they still hackles if they were mostly fragments of calcified muscle and bone spikes?

Fuck if I know.

“Kill them,” Burnscar said.  She pointed at Grue and I.

Yeeeah.

As unsympathetic as she can be, she’s a lonely girl who needs her friends even if she won’t admit it. The Element of Loyalty, here being asked to kill the closest people she has to true friends, murdering her connections before someone can use them against her and facing the fear of not having them.

Bitch laughed, if you could call it that.  It was more of a snort, with zero humor to it.  “That’s supposed to be my biggest fear?  I don’t give two shits about them.”

I’m not sure how much of this is an unwillingness to admit it to herself and how much is an unwillingness to admit it to anyone else.

I doubt it’s Cherish being wrong. Unless of course this is Cherish attempting to sabotage the testing by lying.

“You do.  They’re the closest thing to a human connection you’ve had your entire life.  Maybe you haven’t thought it out loud to yourself, but you’re terrified at the idea of losing them.

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that it’s specifically Skitter and Grue that are here. Throughout the time we’ve known Bitch, she’s had much more to do with those two than with Tattletale and Regent.

Hell, I even suggested, early on, that Grue and Bitch had a moirallegiance, a kind of relationship where one party pacifies a more hot-tempered partner. In Homestuck, that’s considered downright romantic. I’ve since abandoned this idea because it turned out Grue was kind of bad at it, but they’ve still had a fair bit to do with each other.

You know as well as anyone else that this relationship with your team, it’s like winning the lottery for you.”

You do realize you’re pointing out that Bitch has reasons to not want to join the Nine, right? Unless you follow it up with the idea that the Nine could give her the same sense of human connection, but that’s more Bonesaw’s deal.

Well, that was a very interesting one.

I got my wish – we did get to know Battery better, and it turns out she’s got some history with Cauldron. History that gave us some insight into how exactly things work when people buy powers from them! That was neat, though I’m not sure how important it’ll be in the long run.

We also got to see firsthand the experiences of someone getting her power through one of Cauldron’s vials. That was quite… bizarre. I feel like some of that is going to make more sense later on. I do think Battery’s power ended up reflecting her mental state – she has to stop, have a moment of calm, to charge up her power, which makes things around her comparatively calm and allows her to focus and act quickly.

We also learned the true relation between Assault and Battery: Battery became a hero specifically to take down Assault – then Madcap – but when she finally did it, he weaseled his way into becoming her teammate. It’s a beautiful tale of a long-lasting kismesissitude that seemed to turn red at the end.

Man, Assault is… quite the character. I like him as a character, but what an ass. Though at least he seems to have changed a bit over time.

(You know what happens when you assault. You make an ass out of Australia and Lithuania. Wait, what?)

And finally, there’s the matter of Battery’s third favor. She’s going to have to act against the PRT’s interests in this Slaughterhouse situation, especially when it comes to – for some reason – Siberian and Shatterbird. I wonder, did Siberian too get her powers from Cauldron?

But yeah… as far as I’m aware, that’s it for Arc 12! I’ll be back tomorrow for the Arc Thoughts, and then we’ll move on to whatever Arc 13 has in store for me! See you soon!

“Excellent!”  Assault grinned.

He strode off, looking like he’d just won the lottery.

“Yes, hello? This is the lottery calling! We’d like to inform you that you maybe possibly won the jackpot! We might perhaps send you the money someday. We’ll have to see.”

She smiled.  If he only knew this was her shot at some clean, innocent payback.  The squealing, screaming grade schoolers, all fighting and pulling on your costume and demanding demonstrations of powers and constantly asking questions.

Ahahaha! It’s not that she’s willing to expose the children to Assault, it’s that she wants to expose him to them!

And he’d have to put up with it.

She would relish this.

Wonderful.

I’d be willing to ship them as kismeses. Black romance, hate-love. That works. 🙂

There’s a TV Tropes reference that I make whenever I see a kismesissitude blooming in my media view: “Aw, look, they really do loathe each other.” (I had that thought at the climax of “The LEGO Batman Movie”, which I think stands as a shining example of all four quadrants.)

I am convinced there must’ve been Homestucks involved in the making of that movie. The way it portrays the relationship between Joker and Batman makes it a fantastic hate story from start to finish. 🙂

Lisa grinned.  “And I don’t like her.  But she’s not stupid, either.  She knows this is mutually beneficial.”

And hey, Faultline does generally seem willing to strike deals with people she doesn’t like.

Lisa drew a pen from her pocket and scribbled on the back of one page.  “My number, if you’re interested.”

He took the sheets, looked them over, then rolled them up and stuck them in his back pants pocket.

Lisa just gave Faultline her number. Let the kismesissitude bloom!

“We’ll be in touch one way or another,” he said.

Sounds good to me.

Then he was gone, around the side of the building and up to the roof in heartbeats.

See ya! 🙂

Newter frowned.

Before he could say anything, Lisa hurried to add, “I’m good at figuring stuff out.  I’m a fountain of knowledge.  I want to know more about this stuff, and I could help you guys in exchange for what you’ve already got.”

I think “fountain of knowledge” is the closest we’ve seen to Lisa actually telling someone outside the Undersiders what her power is.

But yeah, this seems like a really good deal for the Crew, though they might not realize how good.

“I’d have to ask Faultline.  She doesn’t like you.”

Oh, okay, he has figured out who Lisa is. To be fair, that’s not too hard given the information that Taylor is Skitter.

I do want to see some interactions between Faultline and Tattle. They sound like they’d have a fun dynamic.

Prisoner 599, Lung, was dining with Prisoner 166, Marquis.  It was a curious match.

Have we heard of that one before? It sounds familiar, but it’s also a fairly well-known title.

*blog search*

Ah, yes, the leader of Lung’s cell block. I once speculated that he might be Panacea’s father, just because he once operated in Brockton Bay. Last we heard, Lung didn’t like him, but thought him to be a fair man. I guess something might’ve changed his opinion?

The two were near complete opposites.  Lung maintained a veneer of civility over an almost feral core self, while the Marquis was sometimes rude or casually cruel, but he remained deeply honorable beneath that.

Huh, nice.

Intrigued, Dragon hooked into the house program’s data.  The two had meals together every second day.  The house program monitored all prisoner exchanges and rated every interaction.  This let the house program track the likelihood of fights, dangerous levels of prisoner collusion, romantic relationships and more.

Big Brother is watching you… (You’re in a prison. It makes total sense for your every move to be watched.)

Every meal between Lung and Marquis made for a very interesting looking set of data.  The numbers swung back and forth as the dialogues continued, with hostility, concern and threat of imminent physical violence always looming, but however close it came, neither attacked the other.

You know, this sounds a lot like a kismesissitude. Hey, Dragon, did you ever read any Homestuck in your probably minimal spare time?

Prisoner 601, Canary, had settled in.

Ah, there she is.

I forgot I was going to make note of the fact that we were counting backwards and Canary was next.

Dragon often tuned in to hear the girl sing to the rest of cell block E.

Heh. That would probably be a bad idea if Dragon weren’t an AI. Could still be, but I doubt Paige’s power works on AIs.

The girl was deeply unhappy, much of the time, but she was adapting.  Dragon had followed as Prisoner 601 engaged in an uneasy relationship with Prisoner 582.  It wasn’t love, it wasn’t romance, or even anything passionate, but the two offered one another company.

Good to hear she found something with someone in there.

krixwell-liveblogs:

SkitterPan = Skitter + Panacea

Ahh, I see. I’m not inclined to ship that in the traditional sense (though I’m sure there’s plenty of Enemies (to Friends) to Lovers of them out there), but add a touch of Homestuck to it and there’s a pretty solid potential for a kismesissitude there.

For the non-Homestucks among you, that essentially means romantic rivalry, hate romance, though a healthy kismesissitude also requires an element of appreciation – even when a relationship is founded on mutual disgust, there’s gotta be something to make them enjoy it enough to pursue it. Also, if this weren’t the case, many kismeses would just end up killing each other.

Skitterpan is Skitter/Panacea, a common ship in various fics where Taylor becomes a hero. Skitter/Weld has been done, but I don’t know if it has a name.

Ah, yeah, I suppose flushed Skitterpan works a lot better in hero!Taylor AUs.
