Sierra glanced at the kids who had shrunk back against counters, cabinets and the wall.  There were tears tracking through the dirt on their faces, but they were mostly managing to keep quiet.

“Well?” Yan asked, raising her voice.

Sierra couldn’t bring herself to speak.  Being shot in the hand- she might never use it again.  But the knee was supposedly the part of the body that had the hardest time recovering from a major injury.

Hm. I think if I was forced to choose, I’d go with the hand. Being forced to use only one hand sounds better than having trouble walking. Even if I am a sack of ‘taters.

Yan bent down and grabbed one of the oldest boys by the hair.  Ten years old, blond hair in bad need of a cut and a pugnacious nose.  He squealed and writhed in pain at the grip on his scalp, until he wrenched himself out of Yan’s grip, falling flat on his back.

Clock is ticking, Sierra.

The girl jammed the gun in his mouth before he could recover, and he froze.

“Choose!”

I saw drag marks in the sand, leading to the water.  Who had that been?

…did one of them decide to drown themself to get out of this? Or attempt to swim out while partially paralyzed?

The knife was the last thing I spotted.  It had been slammed into the metal hull of the boat.  I stepped over the chain and collar that had probably been attached to Cherish.

Ah, so it was the right place, then?

I pulled the knife free of the wall and used my bugs to catch the note before it fluttered to the floor.

Ooh, this sounds interesting.

We concede our loss to you, Brockton Bay.  As per my agreement with Miss Amelia, we’ll be leaving your fascinating city.  It was fun.

VICTORY!

Except, y’know, the end of the world.

But VICTORY!

Don’t worry about Cherish.  She’s sleeping somewhere at the bottom of the bay.

Oh.

…literally or figuratively? Bonesaw could make the former happen.

Bonesaw was kind enough to crank up her receptive range toward negative emotions and remove her filters.  The girl will personally experience every awful feeling Brockton Bay’s inhabitants do- and with the benefit of Alan’s tech, she’ll get to do it for a very, very, very long time.

What a wonderful life she’s going to have from here on out.

Alan’s tech… did they have bits of it, or did Mannequin actually survive?

At this point, though, it’s looking like it won’t matter too much whether or not he did (unless Taylor gets into a fight with the Nine while trying to stop Jack from leaving the city), which leans the odds towards him being dead.

A departure marked not with a bang, but a whimper.  I’m sure you understand.

I mean, the miasma was a bit of a bang, but I suppose you didn’t see that as marking the departure.

Yours truly,

Jack.

Goodbye. It’s been fun.

I sighed.  “Let’s hope it doesn’t come to that.  I think we should give chase.”

“Head to where Cherish is?”

Sure.

I nodded.  “It hasn’t been too long, so they won’t have much time to prepare any counterattack.  It does still leave the problem of finding the others and curing them before something bad happens.”

Yeah, you should probably do that too. At least Lisa’s power might help you find them.

“If the cure is contagious…  Bitch, you think you could work on finding and curing the others?”

On one hand, good idea, outsourcing it like that.

On the second hand, are you sure you want to give up your strongest offensive player short of Ballistic and Sundancer in the meantime?

On the third hand, you may have just asked Rachel Lindt to go around kissing people and I’m not sure she’ll take kindly to that. :p

“How?”

I spoke up, “Cure your dogs.  Spit in their mouths, whatever.  Then see about tracking down the others, ambushing them, and having the dogs lick their faces?”

That is the best way to get cured.

“AHHH HELLBEAST ATTACKING ME IT’S GONNA TEAR MY FACE OFF wait what it’s licking me OH hi rachel what the hell?”

I just came across a mention of the Russian English-language newspaper The Siberian Times, and while I know why it’d be called that, all I can imagine is the Monochrome sitting behind a desk, furiously signing “GET ME PICTURES OF BONESAW” to some poor photographer.

I had a split second to decide if I should chase her or go after Jack.  I glanced at Panacea, saw her staring.  As if the eye contact snapped her out of a daze, she lunged toward Jack, one hand outstretched.

OH HELL YES

Amy Dallon getting in on the action!

She stopped dead in her tracks as he lashed out blindly with the knife.  Reversing direction, she went for her sister instead.

…fair enough. He’s definitely got the advantage of range here.

Also, Amy, I hope you have a very good explanation for what you’ve done to Victoria here later. Did she get miasma’d and attack you or something?

Jack hadn’t been incapacitated.  Aside from the impact of the gunshot, he didn’t even seem wounded.  He was on his feet in a flash, spinning a hundred and eighty degrees to face me, his knife in motion.

Yeah, this is about what I was expecting.

“I don’t really want to know.”

“I’m going to tell you.  And I have another motive, but I’ll get to that in a moment.  Marquis was a man of honor.

I can’t imagine Amy likes how similar this is to what Lisa threatened her with all the way back in Agitation.

He decided on the rules he would play by and he stuck to them.  He put his life and limb at risk to try to keep me from killing women and children, and I decided to see if I could use that to break him.  I admit I failed.”

Marquis is a pretty decent depiction of Lawful Evil. That doesn’t necessarily mean he followed society’s laws, but he followed his own.

Also this sounds like Jack went out of his way to kill as many women and children as he could.

“He killed Allfather’s daughter.”

“No, Amelia, he didn’t.”

There was a pause.

“Did you kill her?”

“No, Amelia, I am Allfather’s daughter!”

I feel like this would’ve hit harder if more had come of the threat against Amy’s life from the Empire. I suppose it did result in her finding out who her father was, though.

But if Marquis didn’t kill Allfather’s daughter, why did he tell Lung that he did? Was he tricked into thinking he did? Or maybe he’s like Taylor and thought that being unable to keep Jack from doing it was roughly as bad as doing it himself?

There’s another option here for what Jack is getting at, but I highly doubt that’s the case, since everything we know is stacked against it: Amy is Allfather’s daughter. Marquis kidnapped her, and lied to Lung about the teenaged daughter of Allfather threat against Amy for some coddamn reason.

“No.  What I’m saying is that Marquis would not have killed the girl, even under duress; that was one of the rules he set for himself.  If he was going to violate that rule, he would have done it when I’d tried to break him.”

Ahh, I see, so trying to break him involved putting him in situations where the only easy solution would involve killing girls.

Incidentally, I like how this is something I could’ve figured out when the way Marquis was caught was introduced, if I’d just put two and two together and questioned why Marquis would kill a girl just for being annoying if he was so against it that he got caught by dropping an all-female team on him.

“Allfather put a contract on my head before he died, because of what Marquis did.  Because- It’s how I found out he was my dad.

I WAS KIDDING

Wait, which “he”?

Jack’s power doesn’t fit with Marquis, so I guess he’s not saying he’s Amy’s brother. But then that would mean Allfather put a contract on his son’s head…

*rereads this quote a couple times*

I guess Jack’s power might have come from his mother’s side. Because the best I can figure here is that Marquis claimed responsibility for the murder to protect his son, Jack, which led to Allfather scheduling an assassination on Amy (which Marquis knew about) and, after Marquis got arrested, putting a bounty on Jack once he figured out what had actually happened.

A letter from Dragon to Carol.”

Oh, or I forgot to switch who was talking in my head. That works too. Scratch everything I just said, I guess.

That would be a pretty cool AU, though.

You could argue less ‘dark’ and more ‘human’. The Wards don’t have them because they haven’t grown up enough to make serious mistakes. ALSO WELD POCKETS MONEY SO NYEH

“The Wards […] haven’t grown up enough to make serious mistakes.”

*looks at Taylor and many other characters of similar ages, and Vista, who is the youngest Ward and the one with the darkest side we know of so far*

Anyway, the “dark” vs “human” thing is a fair point. Sentinel definitely showed us the Wards’ human sides.

(Weld once made the mistake of trying to pocket coins instead of bills and was caught metal-handed.)
