The Travelers were way, way too fond of that line.

Hehe.

“Then, Coil, what kind of munitions do you have?”

“Most.  I can provide virtually anything, given time, but for tomorrow morning?  Well, tell me what you need.”

Tell me what you want, what you really really want

“I’m thinking explosives.  How much can you provide?”

TEAM SLAUGHTERHOUSE IS BLASTING OFF AGAIN…!

When we moved past the darkness, we were standing in the midst of the shattered Boardwalk.  We half-slid and half-climbed down the ruined area to the beach, and walked over to the water’s edge.

How’s the situation around you looking? Fire everywhere?

From our new vantage point, we could see what Burnscar had done.

My territory was on fire.

Fire everywhere.

Grue’s shadows still covered the ground levels of the area, but I could make out the tops of the taller buildings.  Not every building burned, but there were enough.  Rain fell around us, but it wouldn’t matter against a blaze like that.

Yeeah. Rain doesn’t help if the fire is too big to smother.

In the gloom, the plumes of smoke that were as thick around as any building appeared black against the light gray backdrop of gray rainclouds.

Considering the state of Brockton Bay these days, you know what this is?

“The Protectorate?  Why?  To sabotage it from within?  Steal information?  I don’t want to do anything like that.”

I wonder how much Cauldron might insist on the contract if she refuses to carry out one of the favors.

“Just join.  That’s all I ask.  If nothing else, it would mean you had resources and training to develop your powers and achieve your own goals.”

…fair enough.

Of course, they’ll still have two more favors they can call in while she’s on the team.

Jamie frowned, looking at her gloved hand.  She had been contemplating joining anyways.  It meant one favor out of the way, relatively harmless, which was good, but there was little doubt that Cauldron wanted her in place for a reason.

Yeah, exactly.

“Round eight, puppy?”  Madcap said, “Maybe you can finally win one!”

It does seem like he enjoys it on some level.

Jamie charged him, and the rest of her team followed soon after.

Ooh, backup!

Madcap leapt to one side as Legend fired a series of beams at him.

Bigshot backup!

The villain plunged into and through the concrete wall of the jail, and Jamie was only steps behind him.  She saw him rounding a corner and gave chase.

Cue the Yakety Sax!

Jamie stepped through the open door and entered a large room.  As with the hallway, the decor was predominantly white.  There was a desk of white marble with a white leather chair, and two plastic chairs facing the desk.

Yo, listen up, here’s a story
About a little Doctor that lives in a white world
And all day and all night and everything she sees is just white
Like her inside and outside
White her house with a white little window and a white Corvette
And everything is white for her
And herself and everybody around
‘Cause she ain’t got nobody to listen (to listen)

A modestly sized monitor sat at one corner of the desk, with a compact keyboard placed in front of it, and no mouse.  The space was spartan.

They’re clearly not big on decor here.

“(I’m “Member of the Midnight Crew” in this screenshot.)” – I think you accidentally a word. I’m pretty sure there’s supposed to be an “a” after “I’m” and before “Member”.

Heh. 😛

Well, not when “Member of the Midnight Crew” is a proper noun, a nickname.

But hey, I’m a night owl and a wise bird too. I suppose birds aren’t known for their grammar skills.

There would only be one thing in his short-term memory that was that important right now.  Her.

So does that mean he won’t even consider the people following them as viable targets because he’s too focused on her?

With that link severed, he would now feel nothing towards her, couldn’t summon up any self-preservation, anger or hatred.

Ohh.

But no reason to obey either, right?

Another tweak, redirecting the flow of emotion from his family to her, and he would feel an extreme aversion to the idea of shooting her, wouldn’t be able to shoot her any more than he could his own daughter.

Ah, that would do it.

Hey, I just met you,
and this is crazy,
but here’s my emotion,
so now you’re family!

Love me, you?
Love me, true?

It might just be a quirk of the shuffling and/or of the narration, but it seems whoever this phone belonged to liked love songs a lot.

Her boots splashed as she danced a little circle, murmuring the words.  The light drizzle had wet her hair, and she pushed it back out of her face, stretched her arms out and let the raindrops fall against her closed eyelids.

You, who presume you can stay dry, by
Dodging all the raindrops,
Falling,
Thick,
Try lifting up your tongue
To the rain not just the sun
Nothing quite so simple
Was ever so much fun.

J’adore-

Into that French pop, huh?

Or maybe it’s not pop. That’s just the first genre that pops, no pun intended, into my mind when I think of French music.

Sweet Honey-

Love me, love me, you know you wanna love me…
Love me, love me, you know you wanna love me…

Ah, looks like she’s not feeling up for these tracks. They all seem to be love songs so far – perhaps she’s out here because of love issues and wants to listen to anything but love songs to take her mind off of things?

Her head nodded in time with the beat, and she slipped the phone into her pocket.

Oh, never mind, she liked that last one. Guess it’s just a matter of what she felt like listening to at the moment.

I’m often the same way. I’ve got nearly all my Spotify music in one large playlist (currently exactly 700 tracks, 39 hours and 33 minutes), and usually pick something I’m in the mood for as the first few tracks and let shuffle do the rest, occasionally skipping tracks I’m not feeling at the moment, or adding tracks I do want to hear to the queue.

Other than that playlist, my other main way of listening to music at the moment is LumiRadio, which plays Homestuck music. I’m listening to that right now.

Popping the foam-covered buds into her ears, she began thumbing through the music as she walked.

Walking with music is good fun, just as long as you’re careful.

I’m more of the on-ear headphones type myself, though. Ear buds aren’t all that comfortable to me, and it seems to me they’ve usually got worse sound. Besides, my headphones are wireless these days, meaning I don’t have to deal with the Wire Scouts.

(I know there are wireless ear buds too, but I wouldn’t trust myself to not misplace one of them.)

Oh, and how did I forget the biggest problem with ear buds? They keep falling out.

If you’ve got wired ear buds, you’re going to be accidentally pulling them out when you move your arms around. If you’ve got wireless, I guess they’ll fall out less often, but when they do, there’s nothing to stop them from falling all the way to the ground or floor.
