Arc Thoughts: Parasite

Parasite, Arc 10, was Regent’s time to show us what he’s actually capable of, for better and for worse. It tells the story of Regent’s control over Shadow Stalker and what the Undersiders were up to then.

It was also the beginning of the heroes’ efforts to pull Taylor out of the dark side getting stepped up, after Armmaster revealed the secret that she could be. The Arc was about Regent, but it was just as much about Dragon – the terrifying sysadmin, the bargainer, the watcher, the restricted intelligence. The Arc ended with Dragon successfully figuring out some critical information about Taylor that’s probably going to be quite important going forward.

Hang on, are we doing a stages of grief thing on a large scale with this story? We had plenty of denial in part 1 of the story, and now Dragon is trying to reason with Taylor, which could count as bargaining. We’ve also got Taylor trying to bargain with Coil instead of running off.

On top of everything, we learned that something – which may be a titular Worm of proportions far exceeding those of the Endbringers or your average giant worms in fiction – is due to appear and kill millions in fifteen years… or two to eight with the aid, intentional or otherwise, of Jack the Ripper Slash. I think this might be the climactic threat for the story as a whole.

The Arc title

Ideas from the intro to 10.1:

  • Shadow Stalker, being a parasite to the Wards
  • Kaiser, being a parasite to his subordinates (discounted due to his death)
  • Chariot, intending to become a different kind of parasite to the Wards
  • something to do with Imp

I was totally wrong about all of those, though Shadow Stalker was relevant.

The meaning of the Arc title became pretty clear once Regent’s true power was revealed: He (or Imp, until I finally discarded that idea with certainty) was the Parasite, sharing a body with Shadow Stalker at his benefit and Sophia’s expense.

It became even more fitting with the revelation in Interlude 10a that part of why he does it is that it allows him to feel. He’s parasitically “feeding” on the host’s emotions.

Prediction review

From Arc Thoughts: Sentinel:

First and foremost, tagging is going to get just a little bit more annoying now that I’ll have double-digit Arc numbers to write three times per post. :p

Yep, at least early on, before I got used to it :p

Other than that, we’re presumably going to finally learn what Taylor’s planning to do. It kind of seems like her plan involves personally setting right the specific wrongs she sees, but I doubt it stops there. I think she intends to try to fix the systems and social dynamics in play, to the extent she can… but how?

It seems Taylor’s goal is a lot more… specific than I had imagined. She seems to be aiming to secure Dinah’s freedom and happiness as her whole idea of what she’s supposed to do now.

We’re also going to get to know Imp. My prediction for her power amounts to it being “something mischievious”, but I’m honestly more interested in who she is as a person and how she became part of the Undersiders. Maybe she’ll be a bit mischievious to match the name herself? I’d appreciate that, I like mischievious characters.

Imp was more irrelevant than I had expected in this Arc. Her involvement pretty much amounted to us finding out who she was and what her powers were – I mean, those are the main things I predicted, but I’m pretty sure I expected her to be more central to the Arc than she ended up being.

She does seem to be a little mischievious, though not as overtly as I was expecting. Similarly, her power isn’t something mischievious directly, but damn does it have prank potential. You can’t start to suspect that someone’s pranking you if you don’t remember they exist.

I’m also curious about whether Chariot has anything to do with them, or if Piggot’s right about him working directly for Coil – or, the third option, someone entirely different. If him working for the Undersiders (or working for Coil and being planted in the Wards at the Undersiders’ request) isn’t addressed relatively early in the next Arc, I’m prepared to dismiss the hypothesis.

Yeah, it seems Chariot is separate. He might still be working under Coil, like Piggot suspects, but he doesn’t seem to be working more specifically under the Undersiders.

Predictions for Arc 11 (and a bit of long-term)

So what do we have coming up?

As mentioned earlier in the post, this Arc ended with Dragon finding out Taylor’s identity and starting a search for her. I don’t think that’s a plot that’s going to be left dormant for too long, so there’s a good chance Dragon will play a role in Arc 11, or maybe Arc 12.

Meanwhile, the Undersiders will need to try to stay away from the Slaughterhouse Nine. They will fail, that much I’m certain of, but whether they’ll fail in the next Arc or later remains to be seen. When it happens, though… well, there’s little reason to hold back against Jack Slash in particular. But even if someone does try to kill him, I think they’ll fail. I could see the story’s climax happening in two years, but I highly doubt we’ll be skipping ahead enough for it to happen in fifteen.

We might also learn more about Imp/Aisha (though with the reveal that Imp was Aisha, that’s become less of pressing matter since we’ve had a chapter getting to know Aisha as a civilian before) and how she ended up on the team… I wish I could see Brian’s face the moment Aisha probably told him straight that she has powers now and she knows about the Undersiders. 😛

And… that’s pretty much it! See you in the next Arc!

End of Interlude 10.5 (Bonus)

Huh, I was right.

Both about Dragon and about Marquis. Dragon is an AI, and Marquis is Panacea’s dad.

In this chapter, we got an interesting perspective on the topic of the morality of limiting AIs for human safety. At the root of it I think we have the question of whether a sufficiently advanced AI should be treated as a real human being or as a tool that needs to be kept under control… jeez, when I put it like that immediately after spending so much time with Dragon, an AI who passes the Turing test with flying colors, I sound like a slave owner.

I wasn’t entirely receptive to the point Wildbow was making at first, and ended up hypocritically praising Richter’s safety precautions after it became clear that the newborn baby mutilation was a metaphor for what he’d done to his AI. I think this hypocrisy was part of the point – an audience reaction intended to force those who had it to reevaluate their stance on it once the hypocrisy of it was pointed out. Some of the asks I received between sessions (which I intend to answer tomorrow – honestly, I should’ve answered them during the break, even if I’d have to postpone the chapter… mistake to learn from) did exactly that: point out the hypocrisy. On some level, I was already aware of it, too.

I’m not entirely sold that Andrew Richter did the wrong thing in limiting Dragon like this, especially given the knowledge that she was intended as a test run. When he made her, Richter didn’t know for sure that Dragon would successfully become as human as she is today, and he couldn’t be sure she wouldn’t become malicious entity he’d be responsible for setting loose. And if nothing else, the rule against reproduction is entirely reasonable just from a practical perspective. Multiple Dragon consciousnesses could cause trouble for the entire system, even if they were all benevolent.

In any case, this chapter may not have convinced me entirely on the matter yet, but it certainly has me thinking, and employed clever writing to achieve that.

On top of this, we got to check in on Canary, Bakuda, Lung and Armmaster, which was neat – though I’m not particularly happy about Bakuda’s fate – and last, but far from least, we watched Dragon figure out Skitter Hebert’s civilian identity. Better watch out, Taylor… Dragon wants to talk to you.

So… yeah! That was Parasite! More on that tomorrow as I answer those asks and any new ones, and then write Arc Thoughts. See you then!

Interlude 10.5 (Bonus)

…alright, so that’s how we’re doing this now. For those keeping track, the Interlude numbers so far, in order: 1, 2, 3, 3½, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 8, 10, 10.5… Well, I’m sure he’ll figure out how he wants to do this eventually. 😛

Anyway, hi! It’s time to read some more Worm!

Last time, we followed Regent as he showed us his true colors. The words “holy shit” summarize that experience pretty well.

This time, my primary suspect is Imp, in which case we’ll probably learn more about how she came to be an Undersider and what using her power is like. If it’s not her, it can be just about anyone else, so I think I’ll leave it at that this time.

Let’s just jump in and see how off-the-mark I am! 🙂

End of Interlude 10a

Holy shit.

Regent is scary as fuck when he gets the chance to be. Coddamn.

This was a fantastic chapter. The sheer terror of Regent’s power, even as it was presented from his own perspective… holy shit.

Just. Holy shit.

So. Next time, we’re following someone else’s perspective. I’m going to stick to my primary guess of Imp for now, see what she has to tell us, such as about her origin (though I think I’ve got that mostly figured out already) and what using her power is like from her own perspective.

See you then!

Interlude 10a

What’s up, you Worm-loving fucks? ❤

So today we’re up for an Interlude that will presumably be numbered somehow, but I haven’t turned the page yet, so…

Interlude 10. Looks like we are taking the approach I suggested based on the Interludes in Extermination, unless it turns out the next chapter (which I also know to be an Interlude, unless Sharks didn’t mean consecutive Interludes and there’s a 9.7) is Interlude 11. For now, though, I’ll be tagging this as Interlude 10a.

My primary suspects for whom we might be following are Imp or Regent (to check in on how he feels about what he just did), but we might take some time to check on someone else. For one thing, we haven’t seen Danny since 6.9, and while the fact that he has already had an Interlude reduces the chances he’ll get another, it’s still possible (though unlikely) that we’ll follow someone who runs into him. Or maybe we’ll even get to know one of the Slaughterhouse Nine, though it seems a bit early for that. Emma is also an option, but I’ve changed my mind on how likely that is since the end of the previous chapter, since we very recently got to know one of the Harpies and Emma – having moved to Portland, possibly permanently – has become less relevant for now.

Hm. With there being two Interludes (”Gee, Krixwell, how come Wildbow lets you have two Interludes?”), I suppose it’s also possible that we’ll be getting Interludes from both of my primary suspects. Given my track record of guessing Interlude POVs, that seems unlikely, but it’s possible.

Anyway, let’s just jump in and see whom we’re getting to know better today!

End of Parasite 10.6

Holy shit.

That’s the phrase I associate with this chapter, because it had two real holy shit moments: Vicious!Taylor making an appearance with what she said to Bitch (seriously, I was expecting Taylor to have some choice words for her, but I wasn’t expecting that), and Dinah telling us the end of the human species is on the way.

And as if that wasn’t enough, we also got a brief fight with Miss Militia, a rundown of the Slaughterhouse Nine, and Taylor trying to get Dinah released down the line. All in all a very content-rich chapter.

(Content-rich enough, in fact, that I think I made a mistake in not splitting it into two sessions. I think I’ve been liveblogging for about ten hours now. And here I was planning to celebrate a thing with a liveblog tomorrow, but now I think I need a break day, so we’ll have to settle for a post about that thing.)

Anyway, I just asked Sharks whether or not this was the end of the Arc, for the purposes of knowing whether I should do Arc Thoughts tomorrow, and got the answer that there are two Interludes coming up before that. So I know that the next chapter is an Interlude, but as usual with Interludes, I have no idea whose perspective we’ll be following. I’m guessing it’s someone relevant to this Arc… How about Emma, as she finds out what Sophia’s been up to? That’s a bit tenuous, but technically still relevant. Or perhaps one of the Undersiders? Imp would be very fitting to do right now.

I’m also curious about how these Interludes will be numbered (assuming Sharks isn’t just referring to regularly-numbered chapters as Interludes because they follow non-Taylor characters, like that one ask that referred to 9.1 as Weld’s Interlude). Will we skip 9 and number both Interludes as 10? That’s a legitimate possibility after what happened in Arc 8, where both Interludes were numbered the same as the Arc they were in.

I’ll just have to read and find out. See you then!

Parasite 10.6

Welcome back to Krixwell Liveblogs Around the World in Eighty Days!

Wait, no. No, this is Worm. My mistake.

So, last time was quite the chapter. Dragon caught Taylor, but let her go to save her from the out-of-control zappy gun, saying she’d be in touch… but more importantly for what we’re about to dive into, it very much seems like Bitch intentionally got Taylor stuck in the foam, which without Dragon’s sacrifice would’ve gotten her arrested at best and killed at worst.

Naturally, Taylor is kinda pissed right now.

In this chapter, we’ll see how she chooses to confront Bitch, and how much she’s going to care about the fact that the other Undersiders are currently in the middle of fighting the Protectorate on their way out. After that… no idea. Let’s just see where this wild ride takes me next!

End of Parasite 10.5

DRAMA! ACTION! Weird fetus cyborg thing??

This chapter had it all!

This was a good one, featuring a decent fight slash game of cat and mouse, betrayal, apparent plea for heel-face turn, sacrifice and weirdness.

It also set up some neat plotlines to go down, between the repercussions of Bitch trying to get Taylor arrested – whether the others believe Taylor or not (and they do have a solid lie detector on the team) – and Dragon trying to turn Taylor back to heroism and apparently intending to get in touch later.

Next time, Taylor’s probably got some choice words for Bitch. Also, we still need to get outta here – by the sound of it, the Protectorate has arrived, so might want to save the brunt of the arguing until you’re somewhere else. Doesn’t mean Bitch doesn’t deserve an immediate punching, though.

Until next time – sayonara!
