Endbringer of Extermination 8.1

Geez, when I decided to use “Endbringer of” for the closing posts of each chapter of this situation, I wasn’t expecting Arc 8 to have such a long name.

Anyway, this was an alright chapter. It had a lot in common with Hive 5.1, in that it was primarily about a whole bunch of new and old characters attending a meeting under cape truce. And hey, that’s not a bad thing – we got to meet a lot of characters that I’m looking forward to seeing in the upcoming chapters. Though I’d better prepare for a bunch of them dying, too.

Armsmaster, for one, has a huge death flag. As far as Brockton Bay is concerned, he’s practically retiring in dishonor anyway, most likely exiting the story for good (except maybe a very occasional guest appearance). As such, there’s no reason for him to not end up dying in this battle, possibly heroically to make up for his dishonor. There’s also a risk of something similar with Aegis.

Taylor, obviously, needs to survive if she’s going to keep being the POV character and narrator, but I’m not sure I’d assume the same plot armor for all of the Undersiders. One in four is a scary ratio when we’ve got exactly four of the main protagonists here. Anyway, I think if anyone’s going to die among them, Brian is particularly vulnerable, being someone Taylor has built up a strong emotional attachment to (that attachment having been ripped to pieces in the last Arc only makes it worse). Alec is unlikely because he needs more fleshing out. Lisa has some of the same issue as Alec, though not as intensely – we know her a bit better, but I still feel like there’s a lot more to know about Lisa before she gets killed off.

As for the rest, Sundancer is at some risk, though I think Wildbow might want to delve more into the issues in the Travelers at a later date, and Sundancer seems to be his main conduit for doing so.

I’m also thinking at least one of the big shots might go down, to show even more how powerful Leviathan is. Legend and Alexandria are at a fair bit of risk due to their idolization by Taylor, though their status as Triumvirate members ought to protect them somewhat. Maybe Myrddin or Chevalier will go down instead – as team leaders, they’re still fairly big shots, just not that big shots.

On the other end of the scale, there’s likely cannon fodder such as a whole bunch of thus far unnamed Wards and Protectorate members, Parian, Bambina… Laserdream and/or Shielder might go down too so we’ve got some from New Wave…

Basically, lots of people are gonna die and this is getting morbid. I’m beginning to understand Lisa’s reaction in Agitation 3.6.

Next time is presumably briefing time, but since they only have a few minutes, there’s a decent chance they’ll start moving out for the battle as well. Then the dying starts.

Whew, what a fun story, eh? See you next time!

Extermination 8.1

Alrighty, then! It’s time to liveblarg some Blergenblurgers! Uh. Worm. That’s what it’s called.

What I don’t know yet is what this Arc is called. Swarm, maybe? No, I was looking for insect related words that could also have something to do with the Endbringer threat, and while there’s a lot the Endbringer could be, it’s very much not a swarm. We know they come one at a time.

(Hell, maybe there only is one, and its powers/form are in flux? Unlikely, but I’m not about to discount it.)

Locust? Known for widespread and rapid damage to crops, but upon further research, that’s because they start breeding a lot and form swarms, so that’s in the same vein as Swarm.

Hm… The title might not be based on the threat, either, but rather something like the conflict between Taylor and the other Undersiders and how it’s resolved. I don’t know. Let’s take a look.

Extermination 8.1

Well, then. That’s quite ominous. I definitely feel even more justified than before in predicting lots of death and destruction in this Arc.

In hindsight, honestly, the title should’ve been fairly obvious. What comes around to bring an end to bugs? Why, an exterminator. (A profession that is traditionally reserved for former killer robots from the future.)

Let’s hope the title doesn’t also reflect how the conflict with the Undersiders is resolved, and move on to chapter predictions.

So, when last we left Taylor, she had agreed to fight the Endbringer along with the Undersiders. I guess this chapter might start out on the way… somewhere? The Protectorate was going to set up a meeting point for people who were going to fight the Endbringer, but does that include the villains?

This chapter is likely to be where we finally learn what an Endbringer actually is. Maybe also which Endbringer we’re up against. We only know the Simurgh by name so far – hopefully it’s not that one, since a second one will give me more to base my theories on.

Without further ado… let’s begin the apocalypse of Brockton Bay. A Brockton Baypocalypse, if you will.

What’s that? You… won’t?

Fine…

Arc Thoughts: Buzz

It’s once again time for the most awkward type of post I write on this blog: Arc thoughts!

Arc 7, Buzz, was… varied. Between Alec’s backstory, socializing with Rachel, scaring off Bottle Man and his mooks, the Braylor kiss, Taylor’s confession and Brian’s unfortunate rejection, roughing it with Sophia, a couple decent fights, dealing with Purity’s rampage, the splintering of the team over how to deal with Coil’s actions, and the news that there’s an Endbringer coming to town, I feel like Buzz had something for everyone.

What I personally feel like it lacked, though, is a climax. Unlike, say, the feeling of triumph as the Undersiders dash out through the balcony door past a swarm of bugs that spell out “LETS GO”, or as Circus, Roadblock and the Travelers help the Undersiders kick their pursuers’ asses, the resolution of the Purity section of the Arc amounted to “oh, huh. well, that worked out.” It was a decent way to resolve the issue, but it wasn’t satisfying to me as a reader.

I suppose the true red thread of this Arc was not the Empire, but rather Coil. Alec’s backstory came out because of what Coil said, Rachel withdrew to the doghouse in part to avoid the others pressuring her on the matter of Coil’s offer (and the chapters could function, among other things, to show the readers what it’s like without Coil’s assistance), the Empire were targetting the Undersiders for something Coil did, the trip to the mall happened because of that, Purity’s rampage was an indirect result of Coil’s actions, then the Undersiders confronted Coil about it, and finally Taylor’s planning to leave the Undersiders because of their stance on more of Coil’s actions. Pretty much everything that happened in this Arc ties back to Coil somehow, though some things more indirectly than others.

And in Interlude 7, we learn that the Endbringers are attracted to conflict. Who’s the cause of one of the main ongoing conflicts in the last few Arcs? Turns out even the incoming Endbringer can be traced back to Coil.

The Arc title

Buzz… yeah, no, I’m sorry but I still have no clue what the title is getting at this time. Suggestions would be appreciated.

Prediction review

From my previous Arc thoughts post:

I’m really curious to see what Taylor does from here. Will she tell the Undersiders what she used to be planning, and come clean about her deception? How would they respond to that? Did Lisa know all along?

She’s been keeping quiet about it so far, something she doesn’t seem conflicted about. Yet, anyway.

And then there’s Taylor’s stated goal of becoming actual friends with the Undersiders – to stop keeping herself at arm’s length. I think Arc 7, Buzz, might contain a lot of bonding. And it has not slipped my mind that she wants to pursue a relationship with Brian in particular, even if it’s not necessarily romantic in nature. Ohh no, it hasn’t. :3

She did make active efforts to pursue this goal, specifically mentioning in the narration that she wanted to join Rachel at the doghouse in an effort to get to know her better, and though it led to a rejection, she took a much bigger step in pursuing Brian than I had expected.

Another thing Arc 7 might deal with is the offer from Coil. I think it’s reasonable to expect the Undersiders to accept it, but we might get to see them discuss it. Alternatively, they might accept it early in the Arc and then the narrative can go on to show what changes that amounts to in their work.

Well, they haven’t decided just yet, but we’ve seen some discussion of it, and the Arc (as detailed extensively above) revolved around Coil and how his actions affected the Undersiders and their decision.

Predictions for Arc 8

The obvious one: Much of the city’s honorable cape population will band together to take down the Endbringer.

There will probably be a lot of death and destruction before they succeed, possibly including already named characters. In particular, I’m a bit worried for Danny’s safety – Wildbow could get a lot of angst mileage from killing him off right now.

On a brighter note, I think the experience will cause Taylor to ultimately change her mind about leaving the Undersiders. We’ll also likely find out what the Undersiders ultimately decide to do regarding Coil’s offer and their existing arrangement. I’m no longer certain what they’ll decide, though I’m slightly leaning towards them accepting the offer.

So yeah! Just bring it, Endbringer… wait, bad wor–

Endbringer of Interlude 7

It’s coming…

So, this was an interesting chapter. First we got the thrilling backstory of Miss Militia, which was very interesting even if I did get a little too hung up on pine trees. It featured an actual incomprehensible being, so if the Endbringers aren’t among those, at least we did get to see one anyway.

Meanwhile, in the present, Armsmaster is being moved to Chicago and Miss Militia is taking over. It’s going to be interesting to see how that works out for her, and how Taylor reacts.

And then, the Endbringer approaches.

Next chapter brings the beginning of the bringing of the end. Until next time… try saying that ten times fast. 😉

Interlude 7

Yarr harr, fiddle-de-dee! Yarr harr, fiddle-de-dee! Yarr harr, fiddle-de-dee!

Wait, no, that’s not what an air raid siren sounds like.

There we go. Hello, everyone, this is Krixwell, your local liveblogger and evacuation organizer. Please proceed calmly through the liveblog session to the closest Endbringer shelter! On the way, I’ll tell you all about my reactions to Interlude 7 of Worm.

So, what do I expect from this Interlude?

Interludes have always been a bit of a wildcard, but one thing that’s stayed certain is that they’ve landed neatly and chronologically like any other chapter. As such, I think we’ll be picking up during the evacuation, probably focusing on someone either evacuating or getting ready to go up against the Endbringer. I don’t know who, though, and there are too many suspects to make an educated guess – it could be literally anyone in the city, maybe with the exception of characters who already got Interludes. Maybe. And if Wildbow throws a real curveball it could even be someone not in the city.

I guess there’s only one way to find out, eh? Let’s go!

End(bringer) of Buzz 7.12

Man, Brockton Bay can’t catch a break. First Purity’s rampage last week, and now this?

This was a really good chapter. The conflict between the Undersiders went a lot further than I’d expected it to, and it was excellently written. And then just when Taylor was about to leave, suddenly there’s a fucking Endbringer to deal with.

I’m very much looking forward to the upcoming chapters, to finally learn what is actually up with those. I’m not convinced they won’t be practically Lovecraftian horrors and the like, but whether they are or not, I’m very interested to see what Wildbow throws at me.

Speaking of upcoming chapters, I’m curious now. Is this the final chapter of Buzz, with Taylor and the Undersiders going out to help out against the Endbringer in Arc 8, or is this Arc extra long? It seems to me that going up against the Endbringer would be a multi-chapter thing. Let’s have a look…

Interlude 7. Nice.

I doubt it’ll be from the Endbringer’s perspective, but we might be going into the perspective of either a civilian or another cape to watch their response to the Endbringer alert. It might provide some answers to what they actually are, or that might be saved for 8.1. We’ll see!

Toodles for now!

Buzz 7.12

Howdy! Krixwell here, ready to read-y some more… Worm…y!

Last chapter, the Undersiders got more of a glimpse at what Coil is actually like, and what they’ve already been contributing to. Turns out he, like so many other characters, is a piece of shit. (Though he’s still nowhere near the top of the Worm douche scale so far.)

This chapter, I believe will primarily be spent dealing with that new knowledge and deciding what to do. It could really go either way at this point.

There isn’t really anything left to say, so let’s jump into it!

End of Buzz 7.11

So. Rachel came around, but the Undersiders as a whole are finding more and more reasons to be reserved about joining or even continuing to work for Coil. It’s safe to say his attempt at showing them how much they can rely on him backfired, and instead just managed to show them – or at least Taylor and Tattle – one of his darker sides.

Now the Undersiders have a major decision ahead of them, and since it turns out this isn’t the last chapter of Buzz, I think that will be the main topic of Buzz 7.12. Right now it could go either way, really – it depends on whether they want the things Coil promised badly enough to be willing to help a man who’d kidnap a 12-year-old and feed her drugs so she’d cooperate take over the city.

Yeeah, I think Taylor at least isn’t particularly thrilled about that idea.

I guess we’ll just have to see what happens next time. See ya then!

Buzz 7.11

Come one, come all! It is time for the possibly thrilling probable conclusion to what is most likely Krixwell liveblogging Worm’s seemingly seventh Arc! Well, not counting the upcoming Interlude, anyway.

So, last chapter, we had a cool fight against Night (and Fog, but I keep not mentioning him because he barely seemed to do anything), until Purity showed up. Then Tattletale helped Purity get Aster back, Grue and Skitter got patched up by John Cleese, and all was well, if perhaps a bit anticlimactic.

This chapter is most likely a wind down, akin to 4.11 (geez, it’s been three Arcs already), and will probably pick up a few of the ongoing threads, like have Brian and Taylor talk about what happened at the mall, and show whether Purity spread the truth about the Undersiders’ involvement with the e-mail (or rather, lack thereof) to the rest of E88, possibly allowing the Undersiders to move back to the Loft (provided it still exists). Maybe we’ll also get a reminder of the conflict between Taylor and Danny.

Also, the Undersiders might go to a convenience store.

Without further ado, let’s jump into it!
