The wheels on the Buzz they go round and round, round and round, round and round… Man, I wish I’d thought of that one for the last chapter.
Hi again! It’s time for some more Worm, and this time… well, Taylor has some splainin’ to do. I’m very much looking forward to seeing how she handles explaining to Brian why she kissed(!) him last chapter, considering that the truth – “fuck off, he’s mine” – is kind of… compromising. I think this explanation might happen while the two of them are shopping, which was established last time as a thing they’d be doing – I feel like this is a Chekhov’s shopping trip, which wouldn’t have been mentioned if it weren’t going to be at least somewhat relevant.
Other than that, I’m thinking this or 7.7 will likely be the last chapter before we enter this Arc’s combat section, likely by way of Taylor and Brian getting a distress call or not getting a check-in call from the other three Undersiders towards the end of one of these chapters. I hope we get some great domestic content from Taylor staying overnight before that happens, though.
Without further ado, let’s step off this bus and see what’s up!
A cautious, reserved and resourceful girl with a desire to escape the torment she experiences in her civilian life in favor of the more exciting world of capes. While officially a villain, she originally wanted to be a hero, and she still keeps that in mind when fighting… more or less. Sometimes she imprisons people with temporally frozen bugs in every orifice, or carves their eyes out. But other than that she’s a good person!
I like Taylor quite a bit. Particularly the resourcefulness – give her just a little bit of time and she’ll have thought of a creative way out of most sticky situations. I’m not quite as big on the cautiousness, but that’s just a personal preference in fictional characters, not criticism of how it’s written – Taylor’s cautious and reserved attitude is excellently written and always makes sense in the context of her character and her situation.
I should probably note that one of the reasons I like less cautious characters is that they’re unlike myself. In other words, I can relate to Taylor’s cautious side, though she’s a lot better at it than I am.
Taylor is also very good at rationalizing, whether it’s to explain her caution, or to excuse her more fucked-up actions to herself and the reader. Combine that with her status as the POV character, and she’s so good at it that it can be tricky for the reader not to be pulled in with her and accept her reasoning. I like this because it turns one of her greatest strengths into a pretty good flaw under certain circumstances.
In fact, she’s generally an interesting character to follow the perspective of, both due to her moral struggles and because her intelligence and caution makes her think about things in detail. This helps the narration believably cover a lot of worldbuilding that I wouldn’t have otherwise thought about (or would’ve been horribly wrong about).
Oh, and of course, let’s not forget that Taylor can be damn adorable sometimes.
Brian “Grue” Laborn
Taylor’s dream guy – a kind, handsome young man with maturity and childlike traits in one package, and a rational, pragmatic approach to life. As the de facto leader of the Undersiders, he’s naturally inclined to take charge and isn’t afraid to do so, but does his best to be fair to the other members even when angry. Unlike the other members, he lives away from the Loft, which along with his villainy is part of a strong effort to take over custody of his sister from their neglectful mother.
Brian is just a really good dude, y’know? What’s not to like?
I mean, the thing I’ve just learned about him feeling naturally inclined to take charge seems like it hints at him having a bit of a bossy side, but from the way the team makes decisions democratically in spite of that and the way he seems to be fine with that arrangement, I think it’s pretty clear that he’s doing his best to curb that instinct.
Lisa “Tattletale” McKnowitall
The one who knows, and the one we don’t. After Alec’s backstory was revealed in 7.1, Lisa became the Undersider we know the least about, even though she’s been one of the most prominent ones.
Lisa looks at villainy, and maybe life itself, as a game. She appears cheerful and knowing at all times, and while it’s hard to tell how much of the cheerfulness might be a facade, the “knowing” part certainly isn’t.
I’m not going to lie – I’m a huge fan of characters like Lisa. A cheerful, smug attitude that may or may not be somewhat fake? Knowing more about you than you do, and willing to use all of that to manipulate you? Willing to take risks simply for the thrill, without being outright stupid about it? Endlessly supportive about that crush another character is being shy about, and somewhat subtly teasing them about it?
Sign me the fuck up.
Alec “Regent” ??? (formerly ??? “Hijack” Vasil)
Holy fucked-up backstory, Batman.
The laid-back, somewhat immature teammate who occasionally gets on Brian’s nerves – pun intended – with his irresponsible actions. Alec doesn’t seem to care about much outside battle, which may be a result of his, um, “upbringing” as a product of his father’s one-stag parahuman breeding program. Either Heartbreaker permanently altered his mind with his power (we’ve had confirmation that he uses the power on his children, but not what he does with it), or Alec’s coping mechanism of detaching himself from his actions left him having a hard time not being detached.
Despite knowing well how fucked up his father is, Alec still seems to want to impress him. This might be another result of either Heartbreaker’s power or simply a normal issue for victims of abuse – hard to tell.
I don’t have all that much else to say about Alec, and that’s pretty much my main issue here. Alec is an alright guy, but I don’t feel like we’ve seen much from him. Lisa is the Undersider we know the least about, but Alec is still the one we know the least. I’m hoping that the reveal of his backstory is a sign that this is about to change.
Rachel “Bitch” (“Hellhound”) Lindt
Rachel is quite… intense, but withdrawn. By whim of her power, she thinks like a dog, which makes for difficulty when she tries to interact with other humans. She’s a bit of an odd one out as a result, even among the Undersiders. On the other hand, she gets along with dogs splendidly, and saving them from abuse and incompetence is something she’s passionate about.
Rachel is not someone I would like to know and interact with in real life, but she’s a damn interesting character, thanks to her unusual way of thinking and how it affects every interaction she has. Getting along with her forces Taylor to put more effort than usual into understanding the way she thinks and adapting to it, and it’s very satisfying to see that paying off a bit in this arc. The events of 7.3 also helped show that there’s more to her than Taylor had assumed, and I’m looking forward to seeing more of that as Taylor gets to know her better.
Just admit it, you guys have been looking forward to this for a while, haven’t you? 😛
That was the best Taylor-Harpy showdown yet, and they didn’t even say anything to each other. With words, anyway. Plenty was said through actions, though! Such as “fuck you, he’s mine” and “hey look, I can get a guy like this”. And it was great.
And now Taylor has to explain herself and then spend at least one night at Brian’s apartment with him (provided he still lets her, but I’m fairly sure he will). I’m very much looking forward to both of those things… This is going to be so good.
The E88 is of course still a threat. It’s possible the adorableness and possible awkwardness in the next chapter will be interrupted at the end by news that E88ers found the other group (because I really don’t think they’d find Taylor and Brian first) and they need backup. I guess we’ll just have to deal with that if it happens, probably starting in 7.7.
And with that, it’s time to close up this chapter. See you next time!
Howdy! It’s that time again… what? No, not “that time of the month”!
Why would you even think… I don’t even have a… oh, you didn’t think that’s what I meant? Uh, never mind then.
*awkward silence*
uhh…
*crickets*
Howdy!
So, last time, we learned that Coil put out a major hit against the Empire – sending detailed personal information of most if not all of its members to local news outlets – at just about the worst possible time for the Undersiders. Now they’re likely to become prime targets for angry skinheads, including about 20 parahumans.
Welp.
I think this chapter will primarily deal with the Undersiders trying to agree on a way to deal with this. It’s only a matter of time before this causes trouble, so the Undersiders will need to prepare for that.
I don’t think it’ll be a particularly long time, either. This might kick off as soon as next chapter – or even this chapter, if I’m wrong about what we’re heading into now.
Without further ado or nonsense about menstruation, let’s go!
This was an okay chapter. Nothing special, but certainly not bad.
As I had expected, we opened with Brian’s reaction to what happened in the previous chapter, although I wasn’t expecting the adorable crushing Taylor moments we got, nor Rachel’s, um, sage romantic advice, which was all great.
Then Brian and Taylor left to check on the Loft. On the way, we got a neat conversation about how Brian could approach leadership with Rachel on the team, before they arrived to discover just how fucked the Undersiders are now on the Kaiser front.
And boy are they in trouble, having accidentally wound up as likely suspects for a huge hit against the E88. I give it two or three chapters before skinheads come looking for them, at most – maybe there’ll be one to show the public’s reaction to this list being published, and maybe one to show the Undersiders preparing for trouble? Either way, I don’t think it’ll take long before the trouble does come along.
ALL HAIL THE GLOW CLOU– I mean, hi! It’s time for me to read some more Worm!
So, last chapter seemed to conclude the Taylor/Rachel bonding time for now – but Brian is on his way, so I don’t think we’ll be leaving the doghouse just yet. Unless we’re going back to the Loft, I suppose, or (unlikely) skipping Brian’s reaction to what happened last chapter with the E88 members trying to either drive Rachel out or kill her – an incident which may have large lasting consequences, depending on how much Kaiser sees through his lackeys’ bullshit, how much he cares that it’s bullshit if he does, and how much he personally wants the Undersiders out of his way.
For the first two points, I’m guessing “easily” and “not particularly”, respectively, but for the third, it’s a bit less clear. I get the impression that Kaiser sees the Undersiders as not particularly threatening, but they are a minor obstacle when it comes to taking over the Docks, which has been a known goal of the E88 ever since Interlude 2. On top of that, Kaiser is a manipulative bastard who knows how to spin people, so he may very well have hidden his true opinions on the Undersiders behind a more careless facade. And if he’s figured out that the Undersiders work for Coil, or if he eventually does, all bets are off.
…I seem to have talked more about the events of last chapter than about this chapter in this post. Oh well,
I suppose that’s what happens when I have next to no idea what this chapter will be about (other than Brian’s reaction).
But hey, you know what that means? It means I’d better dive in and find out!
Bonding between Rachel and Taylor is kind of quiet and lowkey, but it’s still bonding. And this chapter had quite a bit of excellent Rachel-Taylor bonding. Taylor is beginning to understand Rachel better, and Rachel is beginning to respect Taylor more. It’s great on both ends. 🙂
And then there’s the encounter with Tom, Draco Bottlefoy and the other skinheads. Rachel showed her more level-headed side, which was cool, and then Taylor became a bug monster and scared the E88ers away, which was awesome.
…hm. We never did get an explanation for 83. Maybe it’s something one could look up, or maybe I’ll learn about it later in the story. We’ll see, I guess!
Next time, we’ll probably get to know what Brian has to say about what happened here, whether it’s through Taylor’s narration or actually getting to see the scene starting immediately after Taylor filled him in on what happened. Other than that, though, I have no idea what’s up next. The end of this chapter does seem like the end of Rachel-Taylor bonding time for now, though maybe I’m mistaken.
Hey, Tumblr, Krixwell here! Blogs, liveblogs, lives… okay no, I can’t keep up a Vsauce impersonation past this point, never mind. Point is I’m back to liveblog some more Worm!
So, last time, Taylor and Rachel helped clear out heartworm in an undermedicated dog named Sirius. Then Taylor left to get some food while Rachel took care of Sirius, and I was left with the question: Will this chapter start with the lunch trip or when Taylor comes back? If it’s the former, I have a feeling something bad, or at least noteworthy, is going to happen on the trip… otherwise it’s back to Taylor and Rachel and the dogs.
Other than that, I don’t really have much of an idea where this chapter will be heading… I guess it’ll just have to dive into it and find out!
Either I was faster than I thought, or this was a short chapter. Either way, it was a good one. I really feel like we made some progress on Taylor and Rachel getting along, and Taylor tagging along allowed Rachel to cure a dog of a potentially fatal disease, which I count as a win.
Next time… well, one of two options: Either we follow Taylor to get lunch, or we pick back up when she returns to the doghouse. If it’s the former, that’ll bode ill from the start – if there’s a chapter about Taylor going out for lunch, something’s bound to come up on that trip. Maybe she’ll run into someone, like Emma or Danny, or there’ll be some kind of parahuman situation going on.
I honestly think the next chapter starting when she comes back is more likely, but it not doing so is a possibility worth considering.
I guess I’ll just have to find out when I get there. See you then!
