I think that Amelia is an extremely controversial fic. Like, y’know… not a badfic, just one of those fics that has a lot of supporters and a lot of detractors. The other major example of that I can think of is the Memorials series, where basically Bakuda kills Danny almost immediately after Taylor’s cape career starts, sending Taylor off the deep end and turning her into a “just quietly kill the bad guys” vigilante serial killer.

hooboy, someone mentioned Amelia. It’s not… a good story. It has a lot of really fucked up stuff that it tosses out as unremarkable, a rather surly author, and got kicked off its original website for underage sex. It’s long, the writing isn’t technically bad, and it’s finished, so it has supporters, but it’s not something that usually gets brought up in mixed company. I’d instead go for Heredity as a better, more in character, and less messed up longish Taylor/Amy story that’s in progress. 

Yikes. Not reading that.

I thought Bonesaw and Vista getting shipped with Theo might seem like a red flag…

I know, right? Jack isn’t exactly the hugging type (no wonder the hug was awkward), which just makes it even better that it was he who initiated it.

The weirdest thing about Jack talking about Brian x Taylor is that Taylor didn’t question the indication that there was something between her and a guy who I’ve never thought looks near her or Brian’s age. Does Jack look a lot younger than I’ve been imagining and all the fanart I’ve seen depicts him as? I’ve been thinking he’s in his thirties.

It’s possible he was in a fake costume that hid his face and thus his age. Because of the vagueness/lack of descriptions in 14.8 and 14.9 (even though “Hey! Don’t swear!” was clearly supposed to be the reveal, Wildbow didn’t let down the pretense entirely in 14.9, which I appreciate – see also the way Taylor not knowing who Battery was reflected by literally only her gas mask and female figure being described), we can’t easily tell what he’s wearing.

I do suppose he also has a plastic surgeon who could help him look young if he wanted to. 

I got into an unrelated discussion with a friend and I think I stumbled across an explanation:

Did this cause shipping?

I mean, it doesn’t seem like it should, but it takes so little for some people to start shipping something, regardless of how fucked up it is. In both directions, in this case.

When she sat up, there was crimson all over her lips and chin.  She wiped most of it away with the back of her hand, uncaring.

Yeah, you don’t have this kind of power and style and care about getting a little bloody.

Coil turned to the soldier next to him, “Can you go find Pitter and bring him here?  I want her sedated sooner than later.”

“Can somebody shut her the fuck up?”

I wonder if Coil worries that Cherish might reveal some things he doesn’t want revealed, like Tattletale does to her enemies, or succeed at manipulating someone.

The soldier nodded and headed off to find the medic.  He winked at Tattletale as he jogged by.  I’d met him.  Not one of Tattletale’s soldiers, but I’d crossed paths with him.  Fish?

That does sound vaguely familiar.

Ah, yes, he appeared in 11.8. He’s the captain of a squad, and there seems to be some amount of suggestiveness going on between him and Lisa, which I didn’t want to think too hard about last time because I suspected he’d be quite a bit older than her.

Seemed like he and Tattletale were getting along.

Yeah. Last time, she was putting her hand on his arm while laughing and then winking at Taylor, and now he’s winking at Lisa… hey, I’m not against Lisa having friends among the soldiers (it’s good that people get along), I’m just a little averse to the idea of it going further unless it’s established that Fish is super young for his position.

End of Interlude 12a

Apart from Cherish’s Interlude, we’ve only really seen the Slaughterhouse Nine from the outside before, and mostly isolated from each other. This chapter was exactly what we needed: A chance to see them all together, from inside the group, and flesh out each of them and how they interact with each other.

The chapter went further to do that than by just showing them acting as a group, too. We also got Jack Slash’s insights into the motivations and vulnerabilities of each member, in the form of carrots and sticks, as well as some of the less obvious relationship dynamics in the team, such as Siberian’s motherly (possibly romantic, as skeevy as that is, but I said I’m giving her the benefit of the doubt and that’s what she shall receive) affection for Bonesaw. I love that. 🙂

Oh, and the Merchants are pretty much fucked now. That happened too. Turns out the answer to “Will Skidmark blend?” is yes.

Next chapter… hehe. So before I started writing this post, I peeked at the next chapter link to confirm that the two Interludes of this Arc were in a row without any surprise regular chapters sneaking in between them (though I didn’t think that would be the case), and I found out that apparently the other Interlude is called Interlude 12½. Looks like Wildbow still hadn’t quite figured out how to deal with these multi-Interludes consistently. :p

Honestly, it makes it feel like Interlude 12½ was an afterthought, like, “Hey, maybe I should have a second Interlude here, but I already named the first one without a letter…” I kind of doubt that’s the case, since it seems like Wildbow writes his chapters well in advance, but that’s the vibe that numbering gives me.

Anyway, my predictions for next time are pretty much the same as for this one, though obviously without the one that actually happened in this chapter. I’m holding out hope for either Charlotte or Sierra’s POV, or for a check-in with someone on the other side of the rift Hookwolf created. I’d like to get to know Battery more, for one thing.

I suppose it’s also possible we’ll follow a Traveler and get some more information on what’s going on with Noelle and/or on the Travelers’ tight-knit backstory, now that Hookwolf’s schism has forced the Travelers’ cooperation with the Undersiders into the spotlight and Noelle has actually been seen.

So yeah! Good chapter, and I suspect the next one will be quite interesting as well. See you then!

Siberian watched as Bonesaw began excising and stitching together groups of muscle and collections of organs she and her mechanical spiders were harvesting from the fallen.

Just gonna make a new creation right here on the spot? Fair enough, I suppose they probably don’t have any particularly better places to go do it.

It was taking on a vaguely human shape.

Siberian was tricky.  He doubted anyone else in the group was even aware, but their most feral member harbored a fondness for Bonesaw.

Huh. The tiger’s got a softer side, it seems.

Siberian had little imagination, and was perfectly comfortable rehashing the same violent and visceral scenarios time and again, but she nonetheless enjoyed Bonesaw’s work.  She saw a kind of beauty in it.  Even more than that, he sometimes wondered if Siberian didn’t reciprocate Bonesaw’s desire for family.

D’aw.

Bonesaw alternately referred to Siberian as an older sister or the family pet, but Siberian’s fondness for Bonesaw bordered on the maternal, like a mother bear for her cub.

“My Big Sister is Our Pet Tiger” sounds like the title of an anime.

I mean, just the other day I found one called “My Mental Choices Are Completely Interfering With My School Romantic Comedy”.

Did anyone else in the group note how Siberian seemed to keep Bonesaw’s company, to assume she would accompany the young girl when she went out, and carefully kept Bonesaw in sight at all times?

Cherish is probably aware of it, at least.

Also I know Jack sees it as maternal, and it may very well be, but these sound like the exact same symptoms you’d see in someone with a crush. I would not be surprised to find a pedophile among the Nine. I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt for now, though.

The main thing keeping me from more wholeheartedly shipping Taylor and Sierra was that I wasn’t sure how much older Sierra was. Upon some archive diving, I’ve just found that she’s twenty or so.

That makes this a ship I’m only really okay with as long as it’s aged up. Still, under those circumstances, I think it could be good.
